The semi-automatic ground environment allowed NORAD to monitor the ballistic missile early warning system (BMEWS) and other such stuff. About 10 miles from where I live is a SAGE base (closed) that watched the skys over central Canada and the great lakes. I am sure they did a lot more. The significant feature I remember was that the system had a weapons controler who could link up with the interceptor aircraft and monitor its intercept of an adversay. The controler could even take control of the aircraft and launch the aircraft's weapons. All these bases were networked together, and this easily goes back to the late 50's, early 60's. So, the internet could easily be 40 years old.
