If it is an older 283 be very careful as its trigger voltage is to high.
The R8 has a limit of 24 volts (does not matter if it is in the hot shoe or
PC outlet.). The original 283 kicks off at over 120 volts if I remember
right, the newer ones are ok for modern cameras as Vivitar has updated the
things. Most modern electronic cameras have this same 24-26 volt limit.

When using my strobes with my R8, and EOS 1 I use a sync filter from
Lumedyne. I fried the pc outlet on my EOS 1 twice before finding out about
the voltage thing, and if using my old 283 I use my radio slave or optical
slave to trip it.
