Alex,

You can use the R3 in the auto program mode with one or two cam lens.
Here's how:

In the auto program EVALUATIVE METERING mode you will need to keep the
lens stopped down as you press the shutter release to take the shot.
The internal computer will set the shutter speed based on the light
being read through the lens. If you accidently release from stopped
down before you take the shot the metering system will read full
aperture light coming through the lens regardless where you have the
aperture dial set. And because aperture information is not being fed
into the metering system without the 3rd cam, should you release from
stop down before you actually take the shot, the camera will stop the
lens aperture down to where you have the aperture dial set and cause
an under exposure because the shutter speed selected was based on a
wide open aperture setting as far as the camera is concerned (even
though the lens was stopped down at the time the actual shot took
place).

In the auto program SPOT METERING mode, however, it is not necessary
to keep the lens stopped down provided you first depress the shutter
release halfway to lock in the shutter speed (do this before you
release the lens stop down lever). But remember that it will be
necessary to continue to hold the shutter release halfway depressed
until you actually take the shot so as to keep the computer selected
shutter speed locked in.

Regards,
Don
