Tom:

I've owned one for several years, bought used from a friend in Stockholm.
It's a wonderful lens -- great depth of field, good contrast, and very
sharp. Except for the "cleaning marks" on the front surface, which don't
seem to matter unless one gets bright sun aiming too directly into the
field of view, it would be my favorite lens for the M.

My Summilux uses the Series VII filters and shades. This gets one into the
tiny nooks and crannies of Leica lore -- otherwise omniscient Leica
salespeople look at it and swear that the front housing on the lens has
been replaced with some sort of aftermarket component. The result is that I
have no shade or filters to fit the lens, and I use a recent Leica plastic
cap that (almost) wedges into the outer flange of the lens housing.

Bothered by these restrictions on the Summilux and lacking a really good
50mm for the M (I have a LTM Summarit 1.5 that I have used with an
adaptor), I bought a Tri-Elmar last fall. I haven't used the Summilux since
then. I will probably sell it at some point.
