I unfortunately am in those conditions: no spare square meter with water
outlet in my flat, thus no lab. But very good and helpful commercial
labs all around for ultra fast E6 and good quality C41+prints. Black &
white is more frustrating. But B&W is just as frustrating with the
inkjet.

I wish my IT equipment could compensate for the lack of lab. 

For me it certainly is not the case. Down the road, my talented friends
at the minilab can give me a perfect 20x30cm glossy enlargement of a
Reala neg within the hour. Even with a 400 MHz PC-Mac, a consumer grade
film scanner and any Epson, I would not get either that quality or that
productivity. I would not even get any price advantage.
