I can't say I love the smell of hypo. It might trigger some fond memories, but that is as good as it gets. Smells I love are quite a bit different. To get back to the topic. I do both and enjoy both digital and darkroom work, as I'm sure many others do. They are different, and done for different purposes, but the image and its purpose are the important thing, and having both processes can help you expand. Of course, there is no need to expand per se; just as not everyone needs a large format camera or a 600/4. We choose our niche or our range, and get the appropriate tools that produce the results we want. I don't think about all the 1's and 0's being sent down the wire by my computer any more than I think about what the photons are doing to individual silver halide crystal. They do it, I try to manage and appreciate it. In the darkroom, I use a Focomat Ic color (with first Focotar) and a Beseler 4x5 with various lenses. 95% B&W. Digitally, I use PhotoCD scans, which produce either a 18 (2000dpi) or 72 meg (4000dpi) file at, I believe, approx. 14bits/channel. Occasionally I get drum scans. My local PhotoCD/drum scanner is quite good, and in my estimation the Nikon LS2000 can't match his products. For quickies at home I use a Nikon LS20. I then work it on a loaded Mac, and proof it on an Epson PhotoEX and send it back to print on film, or get printed on anything up to billboard size. * Henning J.
