This adjustment is very sensitive and does not go out of adjustment too easily. You need to be able to focus on something at 1 meter and at infinity. The one adjustment to the rangefinder that is easier to make is the one for vertical alignment of the rangefinder patch. This goes out of adjustment more easily and is usually the problem when people complain about rangefinder misalignment. There is an adjustment screw behind the red dot on the M6 or behind the cap screw at 12 o'clock above the lens opening on earlier M's. The red dot is self adhesive and must be removed to access the adjustment screw, or remove the cap screw on the earlier M's. Once you have access to the adjustment screw, turn the screw in very tiny, tiny amounts clockwise or counterclockwise while looking through the viewfinder until the two images of the rangefinder patch are aligned vertically. Not for the faint of heart or the mechanically inept. I believe Walt had a posting regarding this recently. Bill Rosauer
