Ken,

The anti-Newton glass pressure plate for the type "N" condenser purchased
new from Leica is provided with a compensatory spacer ring that is placed
internally in the condenser bore to raise the condenser an appropriate
amount to allow easy insertion and removal of negatives. Also, the 1C has
two holes in the column and a pin to position the enlarger head assembly the
appropriate distance from the baseboard. The upper hole is for easels of
25mm in height (the standard Leitz 8 X 10 easel height) and the lower hole
is for printing on the baseboard without an easel. Also, the use of the
older Focotar lenses, the ones with the writing on the front of the aperture
ring, on later Focomat 1C enlargers require a 5mm ring on the column between
the column pin and the enlarger head assembly. The ring is available from
Leica.
