There has been so much discussion and apparent misinformation regarding this warranty, that I had to pull my passport out and read it. Below is the the pertinent paragraph in my August 1998 warranty: "Congratulations. The Leica Product you have just registered with Leica Camera Inc.is now covered under Leica's unique non transferable Passport Protection Plan.... "The Passport Card is more than a symbol....it also promises very real benefits. "It signifies that you are completely protected, for three full years, against any damage whatsoever to your registered equipment, no matter how extensive or how it occurred, excluding fire or theft. "Just send us the product with the serial number. "Furthermore, should your Leica Product require service while covered by this plan, forwarding the Passport Card with your equipment assures you of priority complimentary attention." Note that fire and theft are specifically excluded and that you must have the part with the serial number. There is no exclusion regarding damage and the use of "whatsoever" in the paragraph is about as broad a qualification you can get. Even normal wear and tear and cosmetic condition of the product would seem to be covered under Leica's wording. Perhaps one of our LUG attorneys would like to comment on the lack of any exclusionary phrasing regarding damage? Regards, Bill Larsen ohlen@lightspeed.net
