One might conclude from all this that the word "unquote" is in very wide
usage, as acknowledged by all these dictionary citations, but its use
irritates some people greatly. How about an alternative?

You said: <Q>Merriam-Webster's WWWebster Dictionary:....</Q>.

That way whether "</Q>" means "unquote" or "end quote" remains happily
ambiguous. Of course """ can be either "begin quote" or "end quote"--even
better!
