I have questionned Jim Williams on this and he does not have any written
trace on the matter, though he does remember a post by Blake arguing in
that direction. Do you have an archive of such a post ? Or Blake's
current e-mail address ?

If it is true it will be interesting to know that the only modern
competitor to the M system was imagined by an American, designed and
produced in Japan with the contribution of optical engineers working for
an old German company...
