There are some good reasons why: 1. The Canon focusing screen is probably optimized to work better with the AF sensors than the using the lens manually. This may not deliver equivalent focus accuracy which the Leica R8 would no doubt have. 2. The whole f stop slower of a vario elmar would account for a good deal of screen brightness. 3. If the Leica had a plain matt screen, it perhaps would have been a fairer comparison, but more than likely it had a split image and microprism style screen in. 4. To be really fair a test would have simular speed lenses on repective cameras on tripods focusing on test targets.....and in real photo situations on the street. The canon user would be forced in this situation to slide the autofocus switch to M.
