United's planes are inconsistent in the amount of carry-on space they provide. What fits comfortably on one plane does not fit on another, even though it is the same type of aircraft. Furthermore, even on some of the newer, larger, aircraft, carry-on space is limited. For example, on the 777 a great deal of the "prime" (according to the airline) space under the seat in front is occupied by in-flight entertainment (movies/videos) equipment for the seat in front. Even the dimensions provided for in United's new policy will not allow the bag to fit under the seat in front. I can't agree more that carry-on luggage has to better controlled, as I am tired of not having space for my camera case due to a few folks who bring 3 pieces of carry-on each larger than my checked baggage, or insist on carrying their anvil collection in the overhead. The current dimensions given by United are too restrictive. A better solution would be to increase the efficiency of delivering checked baggage to the baggage claim area so that fewer people would feel compelled to bring the larger items on board. Perhaps a third baggage category of "priority gate check" for items that are important/fragile would suffice. The items could be acarried to the boarding gate, and retrieved at the arrival gate -- avoiding both the carry-on compartments, and the checked baggage handlers. The service could carry a premium of $2 per piece, for example. Just some thoughts. Mike Swiek
