I make money every day from the pictures I take, and I've never done a release for a picture I've put in the paper. I have for freelance jobs. The law is very clear, that you do not need releases for editorial use. But then, you better be careful that that is all you're ever going to use your pictures for. If not, get the release. Same with fireworks. If you are on public land when you take the picture, and you don't use it for commercial purposes (that does not mean if you make money from it) then you are safe.
