Both hoods have the two squeeze-grip buttons that operate the locking mechanism that engages the outer flange of the lens. The 12585 M lens hood is also usable and engraved for the original f/2.8 50, the f/3.5 50, the f/2.8 35 and the f/3.5 35 (so would the 12538). I have used the 12585 on the f/2 35 and have seen no problem with the resulting image. Trust that this information is helpful. Best Regards and the best of light, Bill Caldwell
