For example, for close-ups, put the camera on a tripod, focus carefully and take a picture at a wide aperture. Let's say the indicated distance on the lens barrel is 1.7m. Then set the lens at 1.5m and take another picture, then another at 1.9m. The first picture (the one taken at the distance indicated by your camera) should be the sharpest. You can also take a measuring tape and measure the distance from the film plane to the object, to see that it corresponds to the indication on the lens. You can repeat the tests for various other distances. The key is to use slide film, a tripod, and to take notes. Nathan Thomas J.
