I moved here in October of 1997 and we were taken to the Farmers Market by some friends. I was standing in line to purchase some apples when this man in front of me said to his wife, "Honey, I'm a gonna take these apples to the CORE". I had no idea what he said and I turned to my friend and asked him to explain what he had just said. My friend laughed and explained that this is Richard Petty country and he calls a Car, a CORE. Therefore it has become the correct pronunciation of Car in the South. One of the misconceptions that one could get from people that speak this way is that they are dumb which is far from the truth. The people are very friendly, would do anything for you and are typically very intelligent. Glad to be here and glad to have a friend like Dan Post! Bob Bedwell Greensboro, NC << Phong- One of these days- we're gonna make you a good ole Southern boy, talkin' Southern! For sure! Gummint is the way we pronounce 'government' in the South in the USA! Soon you'll be drinking beer, watching stock car races on the TV, and taking pictures of pretty girls washing their pickup trucks! You also have to remember that a 'cheer' is something you sit in. When talking to either a group or a single individual, you refer to them as 'You all'- pronounced- 'Ya'll' End of lesson two! Dan- dwpost@msn.com >>
