Didn't make that clear enough. You're quite right about the G. I could do it, and I *have* done it, merely by pressing the shutter release on the G2. But I was shooting perhaps a meter or so away from the faces of two performing musicians. The G is *noisy*, as would be an M motor. That's all. The rapidwinder is *very* quiet., and, in this context, the *rapidity* and the comparative silence mattered. For what it's worth, I *really* like the G1 and G2, and use them a *lot*. Or, to put it another way: my mom used to say that she loved *all* her children equally.
