The Russian LTM cameras are not as well finished as Japanese or Leica.
They are crude BUT effective. I have used a number of these and they
have all worked perfectly with Leica lenses. The rangefinders are
bright and contrasty. The cameras are much easier to load than LTM
Leicas. Most negative comments come from people who have not owned or
used FED and Zorki cameras - anecdotal information. The reason most are
disappointed in these is that they tend to choose the Leica look-alikes.
The majority of these are pre and early post-WWII models. Undeniably,
the look-alikes have the most appeal estheticallly. If you want a
workable body go for the latest models. My recommendations: Fed 5 and
5c; Zorki 4K. These two are abundant and very cheap ($75-$100 with
50mm) The two FEDs have built-in, but uncoupled, meters. Consider
also: Drug, a back loading camera with Leicavit film advance but
somewhat scarce; Zorki 6, another back loader with a 67mm rangefinder
base. Neither of these has a meter and the Zorki 6 doesn't have any
shutter speeds below 1/30. These things are a bit rough but if you sort
through them and get a good one you will do OK. Same for the lenses -
fairly sharp. When you can get a Leica M.
