The film you shoot might influence your perception of contrast, but
what does it have to do with sharpness and vignetting, for example? 
If you have your doubts, you could always test both an old and new
lens on Kodachrome 25... that's been around longer than many of us have.

Not quite.  While you will indeed see many lenses with marks, the vast
majority of them older lenses with soft coatings such as the
collapsible 50 summicron (it is hard not to find one with some degree
of damage) rather than a late 50 summicron, for example.  While the
actual age (and hence amount of abuse taken) might play a role in
this, the scratching phenomenon is pretty well documented.
