There is another vector.

Film.

It has certainly changed over the years, and
while people lament the loss of this or that
emulsion, the general trend has been for
the better.

It may be that the M lenses of 1960 were
limited by the then available films.  But to
have your lenses still be film limited, they would
have to improve quite a lot in the nearly 40
yrs since.
