As a knowledgeable photographer I do my homework before I buy and I've found, more times than not, that the "helpful service" offered by local shops is often full of misinformation for one reason or another, or simply personal bias on the part of the owner/salesperson. In any case I feel that, not being of unlimited wealth, I find it impossible to feel charitable towards local shops that charge 10-15-20% or more above the New York, US mail-order shops for the exact same goods including warranties, etc. For second-hand goods, however, the local shops are better IMHO because of the ease of examining the merchandise before buying. Even then, I have dealt with a couple of the "well-respected" mail-order dealers who specialise in Leica and have saved bags of money buying from them. The USA Passport isn't important to me...at least not enough to pay extra for it. I'm not in the US all that often.
