While many photographers on this list (as you note) could make great photos regardless of the equipment they use, they are also not limited in that pursuit by inferior optical or mechanical quality. Perhaps the razor sharpness, brilliance, contrast, freedom from flare, etc. of many of the current Leica lenses are not necessary to a superb photograph. But what about that one in a million shot where just one of those attributes is not just necessary, it is critical? In other words, a "decisive moment" in photography is, in my opinion, a decisive moment for many reasons. I see it as a coalescence of many things. Any one of which if missing could render the result little more than just another photograph. In terms of the mechanical aspects, well Tina provided a wonderful explanation not to mention her insight on the optical characteristics of Leica. But for me, a so-so photographer with goofy ambitions, well I like the feeling Leica gives me. A feeling that the only thing holding me back from being a great photographer are my own inabilities, not those of my Leica equipment. Pretty much exactly as the feeling I got reading your description of why you like the Martin D-35. Then again, this has all been hashed out a gazillion times before. I doubt there are any out there who will agree that Leica equipment will magically transform a poor photographer into a great photographer. We all know it is the person behind the viewfinder. Whatshisname from France, the socialist guy, used to point that out all the time here. He seemed to relish baiting the group into frenzied chatter through his criticism for all who maintained a bourgeois infatuation with the latest Leica equipment. As always, it keeps thing fun though.
