I have a carrying strap, made by Gitzo, part number G087B. It snaps around
each end of the tripod and has a foam shoulder pad for comfortable
carrying. The pad is offset to one end so the tripod hangs straight. You
carry carbon tripods with a B1 head down because the head end is the heavy
end.

I carried my Gitzo carbon tripod and B1 head all over Europe, for three
weeks in September, using this strap, and it worked PERFECTLY. A bag is
always in the way. To use the tripod, you have to remove it from the bag
and then lay the bag somewhere. With the strap, a simple quick release
un-snaps the strap from the leg end (you don't remove the strap on the head
end... no reason to), set-up and photograph. When finished, fold the legs,
snap-on the strap, and you are on you way. The lightweight Gitzo carbon
tripod over your shoulder does not ever get in the way.

It also travels very well, this way, as carry-on luggage.
