This is a phenomenon well understood (so I've heard) by those who 
experimented with LSD in the 60's.  I heard Jerry Garcia once talking about 
how the first Grateful Dead album was "mixed for the colors".

The music of Ralph Vaughan Williams always reminds me of the bokeh of a 
Noctilux, while that of Shostakovitch evokes the bokeh of a Nikkor 50/1.4.

How's that for a desperate attempt to get back on topic?
