What about getting rid of the battery and the slotted cap altogether and use
your M6 like a faithfull M4 or M3 with a handheld meter.  You could then put
a blackened piece of cork in the hole.  I'll tell you, your problem seems so
serious that I would definitively refer it to rec.p&s.help
Who knows maybe a proud owner of an F5 or EOS 1n will have found a better
solution for you!!

Just joking you guys with big arms and huge black brownies!!! :-)))
