No way.  Aluminum oxide is an extremely hard material that forms a solid
film on aluminum metal.  It cannot be wiped off.  Rubies and sapphires are
aluminum oxide with some impurities.   This described material sounds like
a lubricant or a soap used to clean the filter.

This was probably oxidation of the aluminum.
