Eric, were you using M equipment? I use Canon L-series lenses as well as Leica, and one of the major differences between the systems for me is my ability to get sharp shots with the Leica handheld at slow speeds where I wouldn't even bother trying on the Canon. The Leica with a 35 Summilux (2 stops faster than the Canon 20-35) would be handholdable in my experience to give acceptable results as slow a 1/8s or even 1/4s. To get the same light level on the Canon would require 1/2s or 1s at f2.8. Now that I've bought some of Tom's soft releases, I expect to be able to be even more consistent at those slow speeds! To suggest that the optical quality of the two lens systems alone was sufficient to cause the difference in results is in my experience unlikely... Simon.
