Dark backgrounds are also a help (a wall of foliage, for example). Avoiding bright sunlight on the face, as you mentioned, is almost a necessity unless you want a bunch of squinty eyed kids looking back at you! (And a bunch of unhappy parents, also). 90mm good choice for individual shots, a little more difficult for the group picture because of the distance involved, but since there aren't usually too many kids on a soccer team, it may not be too bad.
