I've not used either lens but the 3.4 APO was designed for the US Navy's
surveilance work and so was optimized for infinity focus, and it's
performance suffers at closer distance.  (This has been confirmed by a
friend who uses the 3.4 APO.)  I'm not willing to guess how much the
performance is degraded.
