The M6 is very quiet, in 4 ways.

a. There is no auto-focus racking lenses in and out.
(About 80% of the noise of G2 or most P&S cameras
       is noise from lens motors.)
b. There is no motor drive (usually) making an instant wind
noise after the exposure. The thumb winder is very quiet.
c. The shutter is very quiet, so quiet it's hard to measure.
d. There is no mirror slap.

With any camera, you will hear more noise than the subject
because the camera is in contact with your face and transmitts
noise to your bones.

In addition to volume, pitch matters. Seems to that the relatively
low pitch of the M6 makes it less noticeable the higher pitch of
a G2 or a Ricoh R1.

However, an M6 is NOT silent. Real quiet. But not totally silent.
