Last year I got back into the system after years of never being quite happy
with other manufacturers' equipment. I recently bought a 400 6.8 for about
$800 in mint condition with a Leica box to carry it in. The images are
spectacular, just as they were years ago. The lens produces very high
resolution and contrast slides. However I always have used it wide open except
in rare instances where I would stop it down to gain a little delth of field
if the conditions were suitable. The sliding focus is no problem for me
especially in light of the near-focussing capability of the lens. Also, it
works well on a bellows for "distance" shots of bugs, etc.

I guess it is a matter of what your are used to or wish to accomodate.
