Of course it could be the R8 as well. Jeff Alford's suggestion for checking the "spacer" is a good one. There is a small spacer supplied with the 40MZ-3 which allows it to use SCA300 series adapters. If this is left in place, the SCA3501 will not fully seat into the flash. The 3501 should be roughly flush with the back of the flash unit and it will lock into place. If it's not the spacer, you could try the flash with another camera (manual mode if not an R8) to see if it fires. That should tell you if the flash/adapter or camera is at fault. Alternatively, you could try another flash with the R8. Does the open-flash/test button (green light) fire the flash unit? When the flash is attached to the R8 and powered on, the ready signal should appear in the viewfinder. In addition, the shutter speed will automatically be limited to a maximum of 250 (as indicated in the viewfinder display). Hopefully, you just left the spacer in the flash. Then it's an easy fix; just remove it and fully seat the 3501.
