It is APO and ASPH! Uh, whatever. Half of that question continues not to interest me very much. APO is a performance claim by Leica. That interests me as a user. ASPH is an implementation detail. I trust the designers to make those decisions; it's my job to determine whether their end product performs in a manner which makes it worth my parting with cash. To trot out another example from audiophilia, caring about whether a lens is an aspheric design is like worrying about how many drivers a speaker has. Do you go out shopping specifically for a four-driver speaker? I sure hope not. You go shopping for a speaker which reproduces music well, with deep enough bass and enough headroom and few enough noticeable crossover artifacts and such that you enjoy listening to it. It's the designer's job to choose implementation. -Jeff Moore <jbm@instinet.com>
