Maybe because that's > easier or cheaper to realize? With the screwmount threads, Ricoh has maximized the available cameras that the lenses will fit. An M camera will fit a SM lens via adaptor but a SM camera cannot mount an M lens. Another plus on the SM side is that the Ricoh lens is one of the only modern designs available for the SM users. Common assumption would have the 28 be the best available for the older cameras (and it is possibly a correct assumption, though it is doubtful). Danny Gonzalez
