Actually, you're better off favoring the highlights by measuring in the direct light, and favoring the shadows by either standing in a shadow area, or holding your hand about a foot away from the meter between it and the source of light. In both cases, point the dome towards the lens axis of the camera, i.e., hold the meter so that the top of the dome coincides with the imaginary line along the lens axis and facing the camera.
