There can only be one explanation for this. They have a new one coming out.
We know for sure the M version is coming, so instead of having to highly
discount the current lens like they did the 180s, they are just letting
supplies run out before bringing out the successor. And they also may be
consolidating formula between M and R? No reason the 90 Summicron formula
won't work on both systems, no?

They are not the only camera manufacturer to discontinue an item before
announcing the next. Canon just did it with their new Digital camera that
is just starting to ship (with no batteries I might add because the battery
manufacturer just dropped out, which makes it a great $11,500 paper
weight). So Leica isn't the only one to be the victim of a manufacturer
going out of business at a bad time (R8 and winder/motor).
