As I see it, a better budget tele for Leica-M is the 1960:s Elmarit 90/2,8.
Price is up with $100, but you get a whole extra stop, and it is a very good
lens for little money.
Other options are the Elmar-C 90/4,0 (for Leica CL) and M-Rokkor 90/4,0 (for
Minolta CLE), that are in $300 price range. OTH they are similar to the
skinny Tele-Elmarit that you dislike.
Still another option is the M-mount Elmar  90/4,0. An old LTM Elmar would be
my last choice, unless I also owned a LTM-body. The adaptor ring will also
cost some money.
