Alan,
Yes this is something that can be easily done with the right tool.  Leica has
a combination wrench for removing the eyepiece and the trim ring around the
shutter release/advance lever.  Unfortunately, the tool is very expensive and
as far as I know, only available from Leica.  Find a leica repairman with the
tool, and he can do the job in less than 5 minutes.  The part costs approx.
$70-$80.
