You have used some analogies that are close to me by comparing Leicas with
Land Rover and Mercedes.  I purchased a 1997 Limited Edition Defender Wagon in
December.  I have tolerated little things with it that I would have blown my
top over with any other vehicle.  It often got as wet inside during a rain as
it was outside.  The windows squeak, funny noises eminate from all over the
vehicle, the doors squeak and I have yet to get as good as 15mpg.  I love it.
In fact it is probably the most fun vehicle that I have owned in years.  I
have also owned a 1991 Mercedes 300D since new.  It only has 50,000 miles and
I have been to the dealer at least 8 times to purchase a new one.  You know
what?  They just don't have the character, the feel or the solidity of my
older one.  Each time I go I become much happier with mine.  

Today I purchased a new Leica M6 Hp.  I have discovered that the shutter dial
is loose and not nearly as tight as my 2 year old M6 Titanium.  Yes, I do like
the M6 better than previous Leicas that I have owned.  Why?  Probably because
of the convenience of the built-in meter.  

I also had to return a motor winder for my R8 that has been on order for 6
months.  It would not wind or rewind the film when I got it home.  I love
Leica products but something may be slipping.  Yes, electronics are wonderful,
but not necessarily more durable, in my opinion.

The Defender is an old style vehicle that still maintains the character of the
original Land Rovers.  To say it is better may be an exaggeration.  To say it
is more dependable, I would have to say yes.   However, for the first time in
thirty years I am considering other brands than Mercedes.  I am also beginning
to see some some small character changes in the Leica that bother me.  Perhaps
I am wrong.  I hope so.  Regardless, there is still nothing on the market that
equals a Leica, in my opinion.  Leica must not compromise quaility or brand
loyalty could change.
