This information is straight from Leica. My feeling about filters is very simply put, "use them if you have a need for them." If that includes protection, then put one on. I might add that the B+W brand offers multicoated UV filters and they appear to be very colorless. The Leica filters have a slight yellow cast. I recently discovered (much to my disappointment) that I cannot use my B+W filters on my 21/2.8 ASPH with the hood! The diameter of the filters is too large! I contacted Leica in Germany and the reply was that Leica conforms to the ISO standard on filter sizes. Therefore B+W filter rings must not be manufactured to ISO standards. I am going to inquire if Heliopan makes multicoated filters. Let you know the results.
