Alastair,

They make a mirror release button for the R6 & R7. I have them on my R7's.
It a little button that screws into the mirror release socket. It's part
#14087. Page 1-16 in the 1996/97 Handbook. Screw it in and leave it there.
Easier than carrying a cable and having to fit it every time.
