The little silver button on the upper left back looking down, next to and right of the rewind crank and ISO knob: what is that. The little red light comes on.<< That's the battery check. Push it and as you note, the red light comes on. The red light should be reasonably bright and stay consistent. If it wavers, flickers, or gets dimmer then it is time for a new battery. Eric's tip on film loading was a good one. That is the best and easiest way to do it. >>I have concluded that the price of entry for Leica quality is cheaper for an R system than an M system by hundreds if not more dollars.<< I came to the exact same conclusion but will add; As long as you stay with the more or less standard Elmarit lenses it is less expensive. Start getting into the apo stuff or the better zooms, or the Summicron stuff and prices go up real quick. Still, used R prices just aren't as high as used M prices. I picked up a mint- R4sP for what I consider a song. It was as new in the box. I bought it from a dealer (Jim Kuehl)and feet I got a lot of camera for my money. Yesterday I bought a used 3 cam 180 f/2.8 Elmarit from Tamarkin and asked it be sent FedEx next day. I was all set to have some fun with the new (new to me) lens this weekend. Unfortunately FedEx never came through. They have lost my new lens!!! I won't say here in public how I feel about that and them, but I can assure you it is not good.
