Rich, the tool you want is a ring wrench, which looks much like those
plastic tools sold for removing stuck filters. If you've got some drill
bits, a bit of ABS, soft aluminum or phenolic sheet and some time, you can
construct your own without much difficulty. So long as you've chosen a
material which is softer than chromed brass, you shouldn't have to worry
about marring anything.

Don't use pliers-ever. I received a IIIc whose windows had been deformed by
inexpert application of same-what a mess. I hope to get a somewhat nicer
IIIc or IIIf someday--my one concession to camera-as-(functional)-art,
though you can bet I'm taking it out for at least occasional use!
