I've not yet been to Hong Kong, but in Singapore and Bangkok, my impression
was that the well-to-do are not ashamed to display signs of their
prosperity, in a tasteful, expensive, impeccable manner (good clothes, gold
Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, Motorola cell phone etc) I did not have the least
discomfort in using a big, professional SLR in either place. Just use your
common sense and have fun.

I was pretty wretchedly ill by the time I reached Indonesia, so I'm afraid I
can't say much, save that there are worse ways to spend one's convalescence
than sitting in a wicker lounge chair and watching small finches fly by. If
you don't actually need the stuff in your backpack, maybe you'll want to
leave it behind here. I don't get the impression that theft is the problem,
so much as appearing that you a potential customer for touristy knicknacks!
No baggage = not a likely customer, it seems. Indonesian souvenir hawkers
can be really aggressive.

I visited Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia in the spring. It was very warm,
still and steamy in all places, though air conditioning in some high class
places can be frigid. Fast-drying clothes that "breathe" are a plus. I saw
some clear blue skies, and lots of misty and overcast ones.
