Subject: NEA funding

The money the government spends in support of the arts is miniscule
even compared to the amount of money it wastes on un-needed defense items.
The amount of NEA money that goes to subsidize "bad" art can't be
very large in relation to the whole. Yet this is what causes all the bad
press for the NEA. Let me assure you that without the NEA many orchestras
and chamber groups, theater and dance groups would cease to exist. I
would not want to live in such a philistine culture. And don't tell me
the corporations would then pick up the tab. The truly odious cultural
expression of corporate America is everywhere. Just turn on the TV and
there it is. Thomas Jefferson would have raised support of the arts to
cabinet level and this discussion would not even be necessary. I for one
would prefer we avoid this type of discussion because it really pulls my
chain.
