They're kept at the ready and when it's time to reload you just insert both the film and spool at the same time, advance a frame or two, replace baseplate and, voila, back in action. I do have the conversion kit for my M2 and I like that also but you do have to be more diligent when loading to make sure that the leader doesn't slip.
