Yes. You can trace the exact route any message took, all of the nodes, etc.
Your message to your neighbor could very easily travel across the states
and back, depending upon the status of each piece of the system. It can
also just sit and wait for load leveling actions to work their way through
the system. My oldest two sons are internet guru's, working in the middle
of two different ISP's. One here in Sunnyvale, the other in Sacramento, CA.
I see the inside of the internet a lot.

This is also why four or five LUGgers will answer a post with the same
answer, as if they didn't see the other answers. Which, in all probability,
they didn't. The LUG server is in Palo Alto, CA. Which is 12 miles from my
house. Sometimes I'll post something and not see it for an hour or more.
I've had private e-mail correspondence answering my post without me
receiving my original post for perhaps another hour.
