It wasnt needed for UV but merely protection as the lens cost $8000. I bought a 2nd filter, just in case & I still have it (new in the box) although I no longer have the lens. Anyone that has a need for it, please contact me by private email. The new 400/2.8 APO is even larger in dia. but it uses only 5.5mm filters in a drawer in the rear, same as the mirror lenses do. *************************Marvin Moss************************* in a message dated 97-09-24 00:21:09 EDT, you write: << >>As Leica said a number >>of years ago "If we had wanted a piece of glass in front of our lenses, we >>would have designed it there. But we don't and we didn't." >Actually, they did. The 280 2.8 Apo Telyt came with a UV filter, and the >instructions said that there is no degradation of image quality except in >strong backlighting situations, where they recommended it be removed. > >Eric Welch Right! You just proved my point. The lens was was designed for use with the filter and the filter was designed for use with the lens. By Leica (Lietz then I think.) However, there was no 280 Apo when Walter said those words to me. Jim
