It's normal to mount the lens first, then to attach the eyes. It should 
be impossible to mount the lens with the eyes on, unless you bend 
something.

The little plastic thing fits against the top edge of the camera's top 
plate. It seems to be there partly to prevent you from removing the lens 
with the eyes in place. I'd guess that it also keeps the eyes properly 
aligned and possibly helps protect the camera body from getting scuffed.
